The meaning of Huatulco, Coatulco o Guatulco is, “the place to worship wood”, because “Quahuilt”, means wood, “Toloa”, means worship and the syllable “Co” refers to “place”.

This denomination was originated due to the cult of a wooden cross that was found near the port of Huatulco, placed there – according to the legend – by an enigmatic character 1500 years before the arrival of the conquistadors.

The wooden cross legend

According to the legend, about 1500 years ago, an old white bearded man, with long hair arrived at the bay carrying a giant wooden cross. He sank the cross deeply into the sand of Santa Cruz beach, and proclaimed: “Behold the symbol to solve your troubles. You must worship it and respect it, for there will come a time in which you will get to know the true God; Lord of the Heaven’s and the World”. For a while, he stayed with the natives until one day he had to leave because “his presence was required somewhere else”. For centuries, the natives worshiped the cross and never attempted to move it, just like the mysterious man said. They used little splinters from the cross in their potions as a medicinal remedy for diseases.

Some historians believe this mysterious man was Saint Thomas, one of Christ’s apostles, who crossed Asia to reach the Land of Anháhuac (Mexico). Another reference of Saint Thomas, is a footprint found in a huge stone called “Piedra de Moros“, near a village baptised after this natural landmark.
